NPQ for Leading Literacy

A specialist National Professional Qualification (NPQ) delivered in partnership, for teachers who wish lead effective approaches to developing literacy.

What are the programme benefits?

As part of a fully blended learning approach that is designed to fit around your role, you will develop the knowledge, skills and expertise to lead effective approaches to developing literacy and supporting children's reading and writing at all stages. Those leading literacy have the potential to cultivate a lifelong love of reading which will create opportunity and influence future life chances for children.

Who is this programme suitable for?

This programme is suitable for Dixons teaching staff who have completed the early career framework who have or aspire to have, responsibilities for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase who want to:

  • support effective teaching of literacy across the school
  • gain a deep understanding of the fundamental importance of literacy and recognise the influence it has on students' future academic achievement, wellbeing and success in life
  • share their passion for literature with the school community

Roles may include:

  • CPD lead
  • Head of faculty / department / subject / phase
  • Assistant principal / associate assistant principal
  • Principal
  • Head of ITT
  • Class teacher
  • Literacy co-ordinator
  • Literacy / English lead

Programme curriculum

The programme follows the Department of Education’s National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Leading Literacy that will cover learning on:

  • setting a strategic direction for your early years setting and apply ambitious standards for all children
  • championing evidence-based practice
  • planning and delivering care and a high-quality curriculum to support children’s development
  • establishing communication, language and literacy approaches to support children’s learning
  • making sure all children experience success
  • identifying children who need support and make appropriate referrals
  • creating an environment for all children and colleagues where everyone feels welcome and safe

What is the commitment?

Over 12 months you will:

  • attend one all day, face-to-face conference
  • attend five twilight two-hour facilitated clinics
  • attend one two-hour assessment clinic
  • attend three online peer-led community groups
  • complete six online courses (six modules per course)

At the end of the programme, you will be supported in completing an open book structured assessment of up to 1500 words over a period of eight days.

There are two assessment windows every year, and participants can sit the assessment two times, if they need to.
