Year 7 students become young journalists in MediaCubs summer experience

Posted 14th August 2025

This summer, we were proud to partner with Media Cubs to bring an exciting and engaging media experience to our new Year 7 students who are starting school at Dixons Brooklands Academy and Dixons Newall Green Academy in September.

Over three dynamic days, students took part in a pop-up TV studio and newsroom sessions, building digital literacy, confidence, and friendships as they prepared for the transition to secondary school. From scripting and presenting their own video content to tackling topics like fake news and digital citizenship, our new Dixons students developed essential skills for the modern world.

They hosted press conferences with staff and used tools like Adobe Character Animator and Microsoft Word to create meaningful media projects. We were especially pleased to see a 100% retention rate, and every participant reported increased confidence in media skills, teamwork, and starting secondary school.

This is more than just an enrichment activity, it's about giving students a voice, building community, and preparing them for success both in and out of the classroom. A huge thank you to Media Cubs, Manchester City Council’s digital inclusion team, and our dedicated staff for making this possible.

We look forward to welcoming Media Cubs back this autumn to continue this brilliant initiative and grow our young media teams across our trust.
