Posted 23rd May 2024
Funmi Stewart, Trust Assistant Principal for Research and Development for Anti-Racism and ED&I, and Maryam Kapree, Dixons Trinity alumnus, recently represented our trust at Leeds Trinity University’s Race, Equity and Social Justice conference.
Funmi was invited to chair the panel, whilst Maryam spoke to represent student voice, alongside other undergraduate and PHD students discussing racism, lived experience and hopes for the future.
"I'm so fortunate to have chaired a panel of incredible students who were brave, bold and honest in sharing their lived experiences. If students like this are the future, it's a place I want to be." Funmi Stewart - Trust Assistant Principal for Research and Development for Anti-Racism and ED&I
Excitingly, a range of Dixons voices were heard throughout the day, as they were joined by Uzayr Khan, another Dixons Trinity alumnus, and Haris Ahmed, a Dixons City alumnus who delivered a fantastic piece of spoken word poetry which encapsulated the necessity of striving for racial justice.
"It was such an empowering day to see such a range of people all driven to lead change and racial justice within their sectors and organisations. It felt extra special to see so many members of Team Dixons, past and present fighting for the same cause." Maryam Kapree - Dixons Trinity Academy alumnus
We are incredibly proud to have been in the presence of so many inspirational people, all with connections to our trust aspiring for a better future. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Nadira Mirza and Shames Maskeen, the directors of Leeds Trinity’s Race institute, to fight for racial justice in education.
