We're delighted to announce that one of our brilliant colleagues, Tamsin Rafnsson, Director of Music, has contributed to a published article in the school management plus magazine!
In the article, Tamsin explores the case for music, and the need for increased focus on music within schools and communities experiencing social and economic deprivation.
Tamsin shares: "Singing in assemblies at school, being part of a choir and orchestra forms some of my earliest memories. Being a musician has, for me, fundamentally shaped the characteristics of who I am as a person and as a wider part of society.
When you look at musical education through this lens, it's hard to understand why there has been such a lack of focus on participation and funding in this area over the past decade and more."
Research shows that only 12% of the most deprived schools have an orchestra, compared to 85% of independent schools and one in four schools serving disadvantaged communities offer no musical instrument lessons to students who want them, whereas almost all independent schools and those serving affluent communities do.
