New NFER report exposes ethnic disparities in teacher training and career progression

Posted 12th June 2025

The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has published a new report: Ethnic disparities in ITT retention and progression. This research highlights the challenges faced by teachers from ethnic minority backgrounds during initial teacher training (ITT) and early career progression. The findings show significant disparities in retention rates and promotion opportunities, calling for urgent action across the sector.

We’re incredibly proud that our school and college trust leader, Faizal Musa, contributed to this work as part of the Racial Equality Advisory Group, helping shape the report with his expertise and deep commitment to equity in education. His contribution ensured that the lived experiences of educators and leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds were meaningfully represented in the recommendations.

This is a vital piece of work in our ongoing journey towards racial equity in education, and we remain committed to making sure every educator, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive.
