Dixons students meet with Baroness Anne Longfield

On Friday 4 July, students from Dixons Allerton Academy, Dixons McMillan Academy, Dixons Trinity Academy, and Dixons Sixth Form Academy joined forces with local district representatives and Citizens UK to meet with Baroness Anne Longfield, a key moment in their campaign for greater inclusion and racial equality in schools.
This was a Citizens UK event with West Yorkshire Citizens and Greater Manchester Citizens, as part of a series of national events to mark one year since the general election. In a powerful discussion, students shared how current systems can marginalise those from diverse backgrounds. They called for meaningful curriculum reform to better reflect a wide range of histories and experiences.
The conversation also tackled the lack of safe, local spaces for young people, particularly those living in temporary accommodation. Students spoke movingly about the impact of having limited access to places where they can play, connect, and feel part of a community.
This meeting marked a major step forward in amplifying student voices and driving action toward real equity in education and beyond. Baroness Longfield offered her full support and committed to continuing the conversation in the autumn term at Westminster. She also pledged to connect students with key decision-makers who can help turn their ideas into lasting change.
One of the students who attended from Dixons Trinity said, “It is gratifying to see people of all different races, gender orientations and even ages coming together for a specific cause and to cement change in a society that desperately needs change.”
This is what student leadership looks like, bold, informed, and unapologetically driven to make things better.
