Dixons Music Primary win competition to name a gritter

Posted 6th December 2024

Staff and students at Dixons Music Primary Academy are celebrating after winning the Bradford council “name a gritter” competition which was launched earlier this year.  Bradford council has five gritting wagons, one from each constituency, and they tasked primary schools across the district with coming up with suitable names for them.

To put their suggestions of names forward for the competition, students had to colour in a drawing of a gritting wagon. Children in Year 2 each thought of their own name and designed a gritter before entries were finalised and sent across to Bradford council.

Dixons Music Primary received a visit from Bradford council’s gritting team and the Lord Mayor on Wednesday 4 December during their assembly, along with the gritting wagon they named, 'Glittery Ice Machine'.

The students had the opportunity to look inside the gritting wagon, see their name on the front of the wagon and have their pictures taken with the gritter. 'Glittery Ice Machine' is the only electric gritter to be named by a school in the Bradford district, as Dixons Music Primary was the only school in the clean air zone to register their interest in entering the competition.

Staff and students at Dixons Music Primary are delighted to have won the name a gritter competition and thoroughly enjoyed meeting the gritting team and seeing their very own name on the gritter! This was an incredible opportunity for collaboration between the school and their local community.

Nicola Morrissey, head of school at Dixons Music Primary Academy, said:

“We’re so proud of our students for their creativity and enthusiasm in this competition. Naming the gritter was not only a fun activity but also a fantastic way to engage with our local community and learn about the important work the gritting team does to keep us safe during winter. The competition has enabled us to strengthen ties with Bradford Council, and it has been a great experience for everyone involved!"
