Dixons Broadgreen Academy student earns national bronze in boxing
Posted 4th June 2025
We’re delighted to share that Year 8 student, Rachel from Dixons Broadgreen Academy, has achieved national recognition in boxing! Rachel finished third in the country in the 51–54kg category at the National Boxing Championships held earlier this month at Northumbria University.
Rachel entered the ring to face a formidable opponent, Lola Hatton, a boxer with an impressive family legacy that includes her uncle, former world champion Ricky Hatton. Despite the high-profile match-up, Rachel showed incredible determination, skill, and resilience. The opening round was intense, with Lola starting strong, but Rachel kept her composure and began turning the tide in the second round, landing clean and powerful shots.
Heading into the final round, Rachel was gaining momentum and appeared to be edging ahead, right up until the final ten seconds, when a quick flurry from her opponent narrowly tipped the judges’ decision. The fight concluded in a split decision, with many spectators, including coaches and parents, believing Rachel had done enough to take the win. Regardless of the result, Rachel’s performance was nothing short of outstanding and earned her a well-deserved bronze medal, a testament to her hard work, courage, and rising talent in the sport.
Adding to the excitement, Rachel's talent didn’t go unnoticed: she was approached by coaches from a London gym to discuss potential future events, and later received a call-up to represent Merseyside & Cheshire, a fantastic opportunity that recognises her as one of the region’s most promising young athletes.
Huge well done Rachel, we can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
