Building stronger community ties: the Dixons Unity Academy context | The true power of community lies in the collective effort and commitment of its members. Community values, local history, cultural heritage, and community traditions are the pillars that define community identity. This session will offer a unique insight from members of the community on what it is like for families to live in the area surrounding Dixons Unity Academy. They will talk about the amazing sense of community and the incredible work that goes on in the area to support our students and their families. |
Dixons Unity Academy allotment: creating space for partnership | Allotments play a unique role in our community and have done for many years. They bring the community together across generations and cultures, to share experiences and connect whilst growing fresh, cheap food. Helping out at Dixons Unity Academy's allotment is an opportunity to get active outdoors and feel a sense of achievement as part of a team. There's lots to be done, including building a brand new shed, planting flowers, weeding and maintenance of the area. |
Wortley Community Centre visit | Come along to visit Wortley Community centre - find out how they support local residents and get a feel for what works in the community. Find out how the community centre connects local people together and helps them flourish by uncovering existing assets and empowering the community to develop their area. Please note that this activty requires travel to Wortley Community centre LS12 1LZ for a 1.10pm start. |
Barca Leeds | Barca is a long established charity providing support to families across West Leeds. This will be an opportunity to explore and support the work of Barca in our locality. |
Community climb | You'll be in safe hands as you climb your way to a sense of joy and accomplishment - take on the rock climbing wall at Dixons Unity Academy. Dixons Unity Academy and vicinity litter pick: a happier, healthier, cleaner Leeds | We want our staff, students and families to feel safe and have pride in where they live. Research suggests that litter is associated with higher rates of depression and anxiety within the community, that people tend to drop more litter when there is already rubbish on the ground, and that the presence of litter is associated with fear of crime and personal harm. Helping clear some of the litter surrounding our academy, alongside colleagues, is an opportunity to connect with others and keep active. Make a visible difference to our shared spaces. |
Knots of love: crochet a baby hat | 1 in 13 babies born in the UK every year are born prematurely, Leeds Children's Hospital is one of the UK’s largest specialist children’s hospitals, where every baby in the neonatal unit needs specialised care. Let's show our community we care by taking the time to knit treasured keepsakes for those babies born a little too soon. Alternatively, knit a hat for a newborn to donate to Dixons Allerton Academy, who are preparing support packs for expectant mothers in their community, |
The joy of reading: the big Dixons book swap | Reading can help you relax and unwind, broaden your understanding of the world - take you to different places, challenge you to think about different issues but most importantly bring joy to your everyday life. Books bring people together, through sharing your thoughts and interpretations on a book, you’ll find yourself learning a lot about others, broadening your perspectives and getting to know your colleagues. Come together on 14 February to swap a book with a colleague (don't worry you'll get it back) and share the joy of reading. |
