Dixons Broadgreen Academy broadcasts live on BBC Radio 5 Live from the school

Posted 10th September 2024

This morning, some of our school trust leaders and students were part of a live broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live, from 6am - 9am at Dixons Broadgreen Academy in Liverpool.

As part of BBC Radio 5 Live’s going ‘inside our schools’ radio programme, we discussed the incredible transformation journey of the school, the hard work of the team there, and what we’re doing to build stronger community ties. We also explored a wide range of topics affecting schools across the country, such as attendance, the recruitment crisis in our sector and student behaviour.

We discussed the work we’re doing around our nine-day fortnight, and some members of Team Dixons shared the positive impact this new way of working has had on them.

Lydia Idris, Assistant Vice Principal, Dixons Broadgreen Academy said: “the nine-day fortnight at Dixons has enabled me to prioritise my mental health and take walks on the beach.

As a woman in my 30’s, I have an increased risk of burn out, but I came back after my first day off as part of the nine-day fortnight feeling refreshed and ready to go.”

Our school trust leaders and students also spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live presenter, Rachel Burden, about how the team at Dixons Broadgreen Academy are tackling pupil behaviour.

One student said: "issues get dealt with really well and we get support from the teachers and staff, we get that moral support.”

Nick Hughes, Vice Principal, Dixons Broadgreen Academy added: “we are proud of the transformation journey the school has been on. We now have a unity of purpose, and our students and staff are clear about our mission, values and drivers.”

One student added: “I’ve picked up learning habits that are going to support me in my journey to university.”

The programme also explored the work we’re doing to improve attendance at Dixons Broadgreen Academy and on building stronger community ties. Our trust feels a moral duty to go into areas that have very complex needs and take on some of the most challenging schools.

We know that the challenges in our schools and in our communities are significant but this is what we do at Dixons, our mission is to challenge educational and social disadvantage in the North and our schools serve brilliant communities. Luke Sparkes, School Trust Leader, Dixons Academies Trust said: “We’ve got to make sure schools are joyful, inclusive places.”

Our staff and students had a truly wonderful time broadcasting live on BBC 5 Live this morning. We enjoyed diving into the broad range of topics covered, please give it a listen on BBC Sounds if you can.
